TIVERTON – On 02/01/2023 at approximately 8:13 AM Officers of the Tiverton Police Department responded to the Tiverton High School for a report of an unwanted party on school grounds.

Upon arrival, officers observed a male walking out of the building wearing a black ski mask, black sweatshirt, and black pants, while wearing a black backpack. School officials informed officers that he was the unwanted party and the school was currently in lock down.  Officers immediately detained the male.  The male was known to school officials and also identified by officers through prior contacts.

School officials reported that they had received information that the male was in the building.  They further reported that the male was subsequently found by a teacher hiding in the school.  The male was escorted to the Main Office to await police arrival.  While at the Main Office the male created a disturbance once he found out that police had been called.

Officers determined that the male, a 16 year old who does not go to the high school, currently takes online classes from home.  The male explained that he went to the school to hang out with friends.   He claimed that he had taken a school bus and entered the building with the other students at the beginning of the school day.   The male was placed under arrest and charged with DISTURBANCE OF PUBLIC ASSEMBLY and DISORDERLY CONDUCT.  The male was searched by officers and no weapons were discovered.  The male was also issued a no trespass order forbidding him to enter school property.

The male was transported to Tiverton Police Headquarters for booking and to await for the arrival of a parent or guardian.  During the booking process the male became combative with officers.  A struggle ensued resulting in minor injuries to the male and two officers.   The male was additionally charged with a second count of DISORDERLY CONDUCT and OBSTRUCTION OF AN OFFICER IN THE EXECUTION OF HIS/HER DUTY.

Officers and school officials later reviewed surveillance video and found that the male had been driven to the school in a private vehicle.  Once at the school a student let the male into the building through a side door.

The male was transported to Newport Hospital as a precaution.  Once he was cleared from the hospital he was brought to Newport Family Court. A Family Court Judge subsequently released the male to a parent with several conditions for his release.
