TIVERTON — Chief Patrick Jones and the Tiverton Police Department are pleased to invite the community to the Fourth Annual Child Safety Day.

WHAT:
Child Safety Day is an opportunity for kids to celebrate the start of the school year, learn about safety and wellness, and interact with first responders within their community.
“It is of the utmost importance that children as well as their parents feel safe and comfortable with our officers, and we want everyone to know that they can approach a police officer without fear if they need help,” Sgt. John LeDuc said. “Our purpose in hosting this event is to provide a casual and positive opportunity for kids and parents alike to celebrate the start of the school year, and get familiarized with the first responders in their community! It will also help us to educate children and parents on many safety topics in a fun and interactive way!”
The event will feature many fun activities and opportunities for families to learn about safety and wellness from community organizations:
- Child Safety Seat Checkpoint: The Injury Prevention Center, in partnership with SafekidsRI and Safekids Worldwide, will help parents ensure their children are traveling safely in their vehicles. Certified technicians will assist parents in checking their child safety seats and educate parents about best practices for child safety seat installation.
- Injury Prevention: Agencies including the Tiverton Police and Fire Departments, the Rhode Island National Guard and Rhode Island State Police will be on hand to educate parents and children on preventing injuries and saving lives.
- Blood Drive: A blood drive will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through the Rhode Island Blood Center.
- Bicycle Safety Course: The course will be put on by Christopher Menton and The Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition. Kids who successfully complete the course will be recognized by the Tiverton Police Department and presented with a voucher for a free ice cream cone from the Moose Café. Families are encouraged to bring their own bicycles to complete the course, however some additional bikes will be on hand for kids to use, if needed.
- Touch-a-Truck: Kids will be able to check out various vehicles, including police and fire vehicles, and military and construction vehicles.
- National Safe Boating Council: The organization will have a “marine zone” complete with giveaways.
- Newport County Prevention Coalition: The coalition, which works to develop, implement and support community-based prevention programs will be giving away resources.
Other organizations and activities at the event will include New York Life issuing children fingerprint and identification cards, AMP Academy running an obstacle course, Aspire Dermatology, PODS Swimming and Child Water Safety, Child CPR by David Paull, and more.
The event will also feature special guests Chase and Marshall from Paw Patrol (from noon to 2 p.m.), along with a DJ, face painting and arts and crafts.
In addition to the above activities, children will have the chance to win one of four new bicycles through raffle drawings, and children and adults will be able to participate in drawings for various themed raffle baskets.
Donation and participation information: Any individual or business who would like to be involved in the event or donate is encouraged to contact Sgt. LeDuc at jleduc@tivertonpoliceri.com before Wednesday, Sept. 7.
There is no fee for any local business or organization that would like to be involved in the event, however donations are appreciated and will go toward the Tiverton High School Law and Public Safety Pathway.
The Tiverton High School Law and Public Safety Pathway Program is designed to teach high school students about the various fields within the public safety profession. The Tiverton Police Department will be partnering with the program to provide in-person expertise and hands-on instruction on law enforcement and the roles of police officers in their communities.
The Tiverton Police Child Safety Day event was first held in 2018. It was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
