TIVERTON RI- On February 20, 2024 at approximately 12:54 am Officers of the Tiverton Police Department responded to the area of Fish Rd. and Hooper St. for a report of a roll over motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival officers found a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon heavily damaged and on fire. Officers also found the male operator and sole occupant had been ejected from the vehicle. Officers pulled the male away from the burning vehicle and provided emergency first aid until rescue personnel arrived. The operator of the vehicle was later identified as Owen Sullivan, age 19 of Tiverton.
Tiverton Fire and Rescue arrived on scene and transported Sullivan to Rhode Island Hospital for what appeared to be serious injuries. Sullivan remains in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.
Preliminary investigation revealed Sullivan was travelling south on Fish Rd. when his vehicle left the lane of travel and crossed into the northbound lane in the area of Bears Den Rd. The vehicle then collided with a large rock on the east side of the roadway, causing the vehicle to become airborne. The vehicle rolled over multiple times, travelling a distance of approximately 370 feet. The vehicle came to rest on Fish Rd. just south of Hooper St.
Tiverton Police Detectives and members of the Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene. At this time, speed appears to be a contributing factor. The accident remains under investigation.
