VIN Checks

The Tiverton Police Department provides Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) checks as a public service for residents who are registering vehicles in the State of Rhode Island. VIN checks verify a vehicle’s identity and ownership to ensure that it has not been reported stolen or involved in fraudulent activity before registration.

Rhode Island law requires VIN checks for certain vehicles being registered for the first time in the state, including out-of-state purchases or vehicles not previously titled in Rhode Island. The Tiverton Police Department is authorized to conduct these inspections in accordance with the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) guidelines.

VIN Check Requirements:

  • The vehicle must be physically present at the Tiverton Police Department during the inspection.
  • The vehicle must be registered and drivable or safely transported to the department’s parking area.
  • The owner must present:
    • A valid driver’s license or government-issued photo ID
    • The vehicle’s title, bill of sale, or registration
    • A $20.00 inspection fee (cash or money order only)

VIN Check Hours:
VIN checks are conducted on Wednesdays from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Important Notes:

  • Vehicles previously titled and registered in Rhode Island do not require a new VIN check.
  • Commercial vehicles or those purchased from licensed Rhode Island dealerships typically have the VIN verification completed by the dealer.
  • VIN checks cannot be performed on salvaged, rebuilt, or modified vehicles—these must be inspected directly by the Rhode Island DMV Enforcement Division.
  • For more information regarding VIN checks, please go to the Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles’ website: http://www.dmv.ri.gov/registrations/VIN/index.php
