Public Records & APRA Requests

The Tiverton Police Department is committed to transparency and accountability in accordance with the Rhode Island Access to Public Records Act (APRA), R.I. Gen. Laws §38-2-1 et seq.. The department recognizes the public’s right to access government records while also protecting the privacy rights of individuals and the integrity of active investigations.

Members of the public may request copies of police reports or other public records maintained by the Tiverton Police Department. All requests are reviewed in compliance with APRA to determine whether the records may be released, redacted, or withheld under the law.

How to Submit an APRA Request:
Requests for public records may be submitted in person, by mail, or by email. Please include as much detail as possible (names, dates, case numbers, or report types) to help locate the requested documents efficiently.

The normal business hours for the Records Division are 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM Monday through Friday.  The Records Division is closed on all holidays. 

To ensure you are provided with the public records that you seek expeditiously, we ask that you complete the Request for Public Records Form.  You are not required to complete this form to obtain public records.

Processing and Fees:

  • The department will respond to APRA requests within ten (10) business days of receipt, as permitted by law.
  • If additional time is needed due to the nature or volume of the request, an extension of up to twenty (20) business days may be applied.
  • Copying and search fees are assessed in accordance with R.I. Gen. Laws §38-2-4, typically $0.15 per page and reasonable hourly costs for extensive search or redaction.
  • Many records may be provided electronically when feasible.

Records Exempt from Disclosure:
Certain records are exempt from public release under APRA, including those related to open or ongoing investigations, juvenile records, confidential personnel information, and records whose disclosure could compromise privacy, safety, or law enforcement operations.

The Tiverton Police Department remains dedicated to conducting all record requests with professionalism, fairness, and respect for both the public’s right to know and individual rights to confidentiality.
