The Tiverton Police Department investigates reports of fraudulent, forged, or dishonored (non-sufficient funds) checks in accordance with Rhode Island law. These offenses are taken seriously, as they can result in significant financial losses for local businesses and individuals. The department is committed to assisting victims in recovering losses and holding offenders accountable through fair and thorough investigation.
The Detective Division reviews each complaint to determine whether a criminal offense has occurred and whether sufficient evidence exists to pursue prosecution. Complaints may include checks that were returned for “insufficient funds,” “account closed,” or checks written with intent to defraud.
Before Filing a Complaint:
Complainants are encouraged to take the following steps prior to contacting the police:
- Verify that the check was not returned due to a simple bank error.
- Attempt to contact the individual or business that issued the check to seek voluntary payment or resolution.
- Retain all related documents, including copies of the check, receipts, invoices, and any correspondence.
Filing a Complaint:
If restitution is not made and criminal intent is suspected, a complaint may be filed in person with the Tiverton Police Department. The following documentation is required to initiate a report:
- Original or copy of the returned check, including any stamped bank notations (e.g., “NSF” or “Account Closed”).
- Proof of any correspondence or payment demand sent to the check writer.
- Identification of the person who accepted the check and details of the transaction.
