Twenty for 2020

The Tiverton Police Department proudly supports and complies with the Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association’s “Twenty for 2020” initiative—an ambitious statewide effort designed to enhance public trust, transparency, and professionalism in policing.

Launched in 2020, the “Twenty for 2020” initiative established 20 policing principles and best practices for every police department in Rhode Island. These principles focus on areas such as training, accreditation, accountability, community engagement, use of force, and officer wellness. The goal is to ensure that all Rhode Island law enforcement agencies operate under consistent, progressive, and community-focused standards.

The Tiverton Police Department has implemented and continues to uphold each of the core elements outlined in the initiative, which include:

  • Adoption of comprehensive use-of-force policies consistent with national best practices.
  • Commitment to de-escalation training and techniques to minimize confrontations and promote peaceful resolutions.
  • Full participation in accreditation and policy review to maintain professional excellence.
  • Promotion of bias awareness, cultural competency, and community policing throughout all ranks.
  • Expansion of officer wellness and mental health support programs.

Participation in the “Twenty for 2020” initiative reflects the Tiverton Police Department’s ongoing dedication to ethical policing, transparency, and continuous improvement. These standards not only guide how we serve but also strengthen the bond of trust between our officers and the community.
