TIVERTON RI-  On Saturday, April 6, 2024 at approximately 7:30 pm. Officers of the Tiverton Police Department responded to Longplex, 300 Industrial Way, Tiverton for a report of a male party with a gun.   Upon arrival, multiple patrons were observed to be exiting the building in a hurried manner. Once inside the establishment, officers spoke with Longplex employees who advised that an altercation had taken place at the end of a basketball game and a player had been assaulted.  The game was part of a basketball tournament that had been taking place throughout the weekend.  Officers observed a large group of players, coaches and spectators gathered at the basketball court

After speaking with several witnesses and reviewing video surveillance footage, officers were able to determine the victim of the assault, a 15-year-old male.   The victim was a member of one of the teams playing in the tournament.  Further investigation revealed that at the end of a game, an altercation began on the court among players.  During this altercation, the 15-year-old victim was assaulted by an adult male.  Officers identified the male as 42-year-old Adam Hayes of Peabody MA.  It was also determined that Hayes was a coach of a team participating in the Tournament.  Hayes was subsequently taken into custody and charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct.  The 15-year-old declined transportation to the hospital by Tiverton Rescue.  Hayes was transported to Tiverton Police Headquarters and arraigned by a bail commissioner later that evening. Hayes was released on $1000 surety bail. His next scheduled court date is 04/11/2024 at 2nd Division District Court in Newport.

Officers found no evidence of a firearm or any other weapons being involved in the incident.  Tiverton Police requested mutual aid from the Fall River, Portsmouth and Little Compton Police Departments to assist with crowd control.  This incident remains under investigation.  If you have any information please contact Sgt.
